ID and passport services at 140 Home Affairs offices will be closed from 27 November to 2 December 2015 due to system upgrades. Director-General Mkuseli Apleni announced on Friday, November 20. The offices that provide Smart ID cards services will be affected.
The upgrading of the system will allow people to apply for Passport / ID documents online. It will also improve the re-enrolment process by removing the need to recapture fingerprints within a specific period of re-applications. It used to take 54 days to produce an ID book, but now with the new smart-ID card it takes less than 10 days.
Services for birth, death and marriage certificates will not be affected and will continue as normal. The old green ID books remains valid. These could be applied for at offices that had not yet migrated to the new system. Director-General Mkuseli Apleni also said there were currently 51 946 passports ready to be collected and urged applicants whose documents are ready for collection to please collect them before 27 November 2015.
