Deadline: 24 November 2024
The impending deadline for updating your prepaid electricity meter is rapidly approaching, catching many South Africans unprepared for the necessary process. Failure to update prepaid electricity meters will result in their operation being disabled on 24th November 2024. This leaves residents with less than a month to complete the upgrade.
Eskom has provided a detailed, step-by-step manual for updating your prepaid electricity meter through its website in conjunction with the Key Revision Number (KRN) dashboard. The first task at hand is determining whether your meter has already been recoded from KRN 1 to KRN 2 by either Eskom or your municipal power provider.
To check the status of your meter:
- Type the code 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on your prepaid electricity meters keypad.
- The display will show either the number 1 or 2, sometimes accompanied by additional letters alongside the KRN number.
- If the number displayed is 1, the meter needs to be recoded to KRN 2.
Eskom stresses that failure to recode the meter will prevent it from accepting any purchased tokens, resulting in its cessation of operation. Recoding is essential for all prepaid meters, irrespective of whether you are an Eskom or municipal customer.
Self-recoding
The self-recoding process involves the following steps:
- Obtain two key change tokens from either a local vendor or an online source.
- Enter the first 20-digits token being – wait for for acceptance.
- Then enter the second token – wait for acceptance.
- Input the 20-digit code from your electricity voucher to recharge on KRN version 2.
Any tokens bought in advance will no longer function on the meter.
For those encountering difficulties during the recoding process, Eskom has provided a list of support contacts for quick assistance.
